Welcome to the Sales World! Being new in sales is exciting and challenging all at the same time. It is a little like being in Starfleet and a crew member on the USS Enterprise… exploring brave new worlds where YOU have never gone before. Fortunately, others HAVE gone there! Me for example.
My goal is to share some advice to help you become a successful explorer without being and not get killed by the Romulans.
First, find some resources to help you learn. Bookmark this blog for sure, but also find others in your company who are successful, that you can ask advice and that may serve as a mentor. Hopefully, you have a sales leader who is good at sales training, that can provide a lot of what you need. However, don’t depend on just one resource. You will need to take advantage of all the learning opportunities available.
Second, get help from your vendors. Find the good ones and learn all you can about their products, but also make joint calls with them and watch them in action. In my early days, I learned a great deal from Steve Cox, who was a Regional Manager at Spartan Chemical Company. He was experienced and a great teacher, and I owe much of my success to him. I learned by simply watching him in action. I copied what he did!
Third, YOU take responsibility for your success! It is your life and your career and no one can or should burden the responsibility of making it, other than you! Quickly learn the philosophy “I’LL FIGURE IT OUT” when you don’t know how to do something. Be DETERMINED to win. Learn all you can and put it in action right away.
Salespeople often feel they can’t control their success. Customers won’t give them appointments, or give an answer to a proposal, or a hundred other things. Just remember, the one thing you have TOTAL control over is your activity. Make lots of contacts and learn everyday. I promise, you can be sucessful .
